RESUMEN

Fundamento: las afecciones periodontales están catalogadas entre las más comunes del género humano y causa frecuente de morbilidad y mortalidad dentaria. Objetivo : caracterizar el comportamiento del estado periodontal e higiene bucal en mayores de 15 años en el Área Norte del municipio de Sancti Spíritus, en el período comprendido entre julio y diciembre de 2010. Metodología : se realizó estudio observacional, descriptivo, de corte transversal. La población total fueron 120 y la muestra 104 pacientes con criterios de inclusión. Las variables fueron: edad, sexo, estado periodontal e higiene bucal. Se aplicó el índice periodontal revisado para determinar el estado de salud periodontal y el í ndice de higiene bucal, forma revisada para identificar el grado de higiene bucal. Resultados: predominaron los pacientes del grupo etáreo de 65 y más años y el sexo femenino fue el más representativo; así como la gingivitis crónica prevaleció y el grupo más afectado fue el de 25-34 años; el grado de higiene bucal resultó deficiente en la mayoría de los pacientes, repercutiendo en la aparición y gravedad de las afecciones periodontales. Conclusiones : se demostró que la gingivitis fue la afección periodontal que predominó.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The periodontal conditions are characterized among the most common ones in human beings and frequent cause of dental morbidity and mortality. Objective: To characterize the periodontal condition and oral hygiene in patients over 15 years of age at the northern area of Sancti Spiritus municipality from July to December, 2010. Methodology: A transversal, descriptive and observational study was carried out. The population was composed by 120 patients being the sample 104 patients with inclusive criterion. The variables taken into account were age, sex, periodontal condition and oral hygiene. A periodontal rate treatment was used to determine the periodontal health condition and oral hygiene. Results: patients of 65 years old or more were the most representative. Chronic gingivitis also prevailed and the most affected group was the one between 25-34 years old, having a great effect in periodontal affections. Conclusion: gingivitis was the predominant periodontal affection.
