Os estudos de coorte passaram a ser amplamente utilizados na pesquisa epidemiológica a partir da segunda metade do século passado, tendo por foco principal investigar a história natural de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis, buscando responder aos novos desafios impostos pela mudança dos padrões de morbimortalidade verificada, àquela época, nos países desenvolvidos.
