Decifrando os significados dos comportamentos etílicos navais de pacientes militares / Deciphering the meanings of navy ethylic behaviors of military patients

RESUMO

O alcoolismo entre os militares passou a ser objeto de atenção especial na Marinha do Brasil a partir da criação do Centro de Dependência Química (CEDEQ) em 1997, quando se constatou que ele era um problema relevante na vida militar. Objetivou-se compreender os significados dos comportamentos etílicos navais dos pacientes militares do CEDEQ, em particular daqueles relacionados ao cotidiano laborativo. Adicionalmente, examinou-se os fatores que determinam a mudança de perspectiva da instituição sobre o ato de beber de tradição para desvio. Empregou-se o método etnográfico, através da observação participante em dois grupos terapêuticos, cada qual composto por cerca de dez integrantes, durante um período de quatro anos. Os resultados indicaram que o alcoolismo desses militares e seus comportamentos etílicos possuem um significativo viés sociocultural que aponta para a existência de questões mais profundas da organização, um sintoma institucional que revela a presença de embates nas relações de poder.

ABSTRACT

Alcoholism in the army became a matter of special attention in the Brazilian Navy since the creation of the Center for Chemical Dependency (CEDEQ) in 1997, when it began to be seen as a major problem in to the military life. The objective of this article was to understand the meanings of the navy ethylic behaviors of military patients of CEDEQ, particularly those related to daily labor. In addition, the factors which determine the intitution's change of perspective about drinking from tradition to deviance. The ethnographic method was applied using participant observation in two therapeutic groups, each consisting of about ten members, during a period of four years. The results indicated that the alcoholism of these militaries and their ethylic behaviors have a significant social-cultural meaning that points to the existence of deeper issues into the organization, an institutional symptom that reveals the presence of tensions in power relations.
