Conocimientos sobre salud bucal en los círculos de abuelos / Knowledge on oral health at elderly clubs

RESUMEN

El envejecimiento ha estado presente en todas las etapas del desarrollo social, cada día, más personas sobrepasan las barreras cronológicas que el hombre ha situado como la vejez, lo que significa un reto importante para las sociedades modernas. La salud bucal juega un papel importante para mantener la calidad de vida en la tercera edad. Objetivo: identificar los conocimientos sobre salud bucal de los adultos mayores de los círculos de abuelos del Policlínico 19 de abril, en el periodo 2008-2010. Métodos: se realizó una investigación descriptiva. El universo quedó constituido por 101 personas, pertenecientes a los cinco círculos de abuelos del Policlínico 19 de Abril. Las variables estudiadas fueron son edad, sexo, conocimientos sobre las funciones de los dientes, el efecto de los hábitos nocivos, higiene bucal, frecuencia de cepillado. La obtención de la información se realizó por la autora y colaboradores calibrados con anterioridad. Se aplicó una encuesta previo consentimiento informado a los ancianos. Resultados: predominó el sexo femenino en 71,2 por ciento. El 78,2 por ciento conocen que la masticación es una de las funciones de los dientes. El 84,1 por ciento no conocen los efectos del tabaquismo y el alcoholismo sobre la cavidad bucal; existe un desconocimiento del 76,2 por ciento de la importancia de la higiene bucal y del cepillado correcto. Conclusiones: predomina el sexo femenino, existe desconocimiento de las funciones de los dientes, los efectos nocivos del tabaco y el alcohol, así como de la higiene bucal adecuada(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aging has been present at all stages of social development. Every day more people exceed the chronological barriers that man has set as old age, which means a major challenge for modern societies. Oral health plays an important role in maintaining the quality of life in elderly. Objective: to identify the knowledge on oral health in elderly clubs at 19 de Abril Clinic from 2008 to 2010. Methods: a descriptive study was conducted. The universe was composed of 101 persons, belonging to the five elderly clubs in the area of 19 de Abril Clinics. The universe consists of 101 subjects, from the five elderly clubs. The variables studied were age, sex, and knowledge about the teeth function, the effect of harmful habits, oral hygiene, and brushing frequency. Obtaining information was held by the author and previously calibrated collaborators. A survey was applied with the proper informed consent of the elderly. Results: there was higher representation in female subjects (71.2 percent). 78.2 percent know that chewing is one of the teeth functions. 84.1percent do not know the effects of smoking and alcoholism on the oral cavity. There is no knowledge of the importance of oral hygiene and proper brushing (76.2 percent). Conclusions: there was higher representation in female patients. There is no knowledge of the teeth functions, the harmful effects of smoking and alcohol, as well as the need of proper oral hygiene(AU)
