Aproximación conceptual a las competencias profesionales en ciencias de la salud / A conceptual approach to acquiring graduate/professional health science skills

RESUMEN
Objetivo Realizar un proceso de revisión de la literatura para construir una propuesta de los conceptos competencias en educación universitaria y competencias profesionales. Métodos Búsqueda de la literatura científica publicada en español e inglés, en bases de datos (Medline, Redalyc, SciELO, Google académico), Universidad Nacional de Colombia, centros de referencia y libros mediante palabras clave. Se inició la clasificación y organización según tema principal, subtemas y cronología. Resultados Se sintetiza el desarrollo conceptual, desde mediados del siglo XX, sobre competencias desde un enfoque pedagógico constructivista en la educación universitaria, con aportes de diferentes disciplinas; se recopilan concepciones de autores europeos, latinoamericanos y colombianos para construir el concepto de competencia en educación universitaria (qué es, para qué es, dónde se desarrolla y usa, cómo se expresa) y competencias profesionales. Conclusiones Durante el proceso de educación el estudiante desarrolla competencias por niveles de complejidad y profundidad y de diferentes tipos. En la universidad las competencias académicas concuerdan con las competencias profesionales (genéricas y específicas) en la fase final del pregrado y en el posgrado; estas continúan desarrollándose durante la vida profesional. Un profesional es competente cuando logra actuar y desempeñarse con autonomía para solucionar problemas reales de diversa complejidad e interactúa eficazmente con otros para mejorar su calidad de vida y la de otros.
ABSTRACT
Objective A literature review was made to construct a proposal regarding the concept of competences-based learning in higher education. Methods The pertinent literature published in Spanish and English in databases such as Medline, Redalyc, SciELO and Academic Google, as well as material in the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, reference centers and books was searched using keywords. The data was classified and organized according to theme, subtheme and chronology. Results A constructivist approach was adopted to the conceptual development of competences-based learning in higher education since the mid-twentieth century, borrowing from different disciplines. European, Latin-American and Colombian authors' concepts were compiled to form a concept of higher education competences (what they are, what they are used for, where they are developed and used and how they are expressed) and graduate/professional competences. Conclusions A student develops different competences having different levels of complexity and depth when being educated. Academic competences match professional competence (generic and specific) during a student's undergraduate and graduate studies and continue to develop throughout his/her professional life. A graduate become competent when he/she can act and perform autonomously in resolving real problems of varying complexity and can interact effectively with others to improve his/her quality of life and that of others.
