Sistema estomatognático / Stomatognathic system

RESUMEN

El sistema estomatognático (SE), del griego stoma boca y gnathos mandíbula, llamado también aparato masticador (AM) se refiere a las estructuras de la boca y de los maxilares vinculados anatómica y funcionalmente. Se ha realizado una revisión de la bibliografía disponible tratando de establecer cuándo se usó por primera vez el término sistema estomatognático. Se ha observado que se usa por primera vez en la década de 1950 en la literatura estadounidense. Se revisan las distintas etapas históricas en relación a las metodologíasque se han utilizado para investigar las distintas funciones del SE.Se analiza el término “sistema”, a la vez que se intenta definir el concepto de “componente fisiológico básico” del SE. Este sistema interviene básicamente en la masticación, deglución y fonoarticulación de la palabra.

ABSTRACT

The stomatognathic system (SE), also known as masticatory system, gets its name from the greek words stoma mouth and gnathos mandible. It refers to the structures anatomically and functionally related to the mouth and the maxillary bones. In this work, we review the available literature about the use of this name, we first find it used in the 1950 decade. We went through the different historical stages related to the methods used for the investigation of the different functions of the SE. We analize the meaning of the word “system” in this context, and we define the concept “basic functional component” of the SE. The mainfunctions of the stomatognathic system are mastication, swallowing and speech.
