ABSTRACT
This paper intends to explore the differences between melancholy as a psychic structure and melancholic characteristics that present themselves in hysteria and obsession. The superego plays a central role in this distinction; the voice that constitute it and its relationship with pulsional objects will also be considered. The insulting voices of melancholy will be compared to those of paranoia and those uttered the Rat Man. The consideration of the superego will be developed according to Freudian and Lacanian thought. The distinction between Ideal and Superego will contribute to the understanding of the subject. Finally, melancholy as abolition of desire will be opposed to manic exaltation.
