RESUMEN
Se realizó un estudio observacional y descriptivo de 433 pacientes afectados por politrauma del complejo maxilofacial, atendidos en el Servicio de Urgencias de Cirugía Maxilofacial del Hospital Provincial Docente Clinicoquirúrgico "Saturnino Lora Torres" de Santiago de Cuba, desde enero del 2008 hasta diciembre del 2009. Los métodos evaluativos empleados fueron las exploraciones clínica y/o radiológica. Prevalecieron el grupo etario de 20-29 años (25,4 %), el sexo masculino (61,2 %), los sábados y la tarde-noche como los horarios de mayor frecuencia. Los accidentes del tránsito y las lesiones infligidas constituyeron las causas fundamentales del politraumatismo facial, asociadas a la ingestión de bebidas alcohólicas como inductoras de un mayor número de accidentes y agresiones en la población. El tercio medio facial resultó ser la región anatómica de mayor incidencia de lesiones, fundamentalmente del tejido blando y lesiones combinadas, las cuales tuvieron una relación con sus hallazgos clínicos predominantes.
ABSTRACT
An observational and descriptive study of 433 patients affected by polytrauma of the maxillofacial complex, assisted in the Emergencies Service of Maxillofacial Surgery in "Saturnino Lora Torres" Teaching Clinical Surgical Provincial Hospital from Santiago de Cuba was carried out from January, 2008 to December, 2009. The evaluative methods used were the clinical and/or radiological. The age group 20-29 (25.4%), male sex (61.2%), Saturdays and the early-night, as the most frequent schedules prevailed. The traffic accidents and the injuries taking place constituted the fundamental causes of the facial polytraumatism, associated to the ingestion of alcoholic drinks as inducers of a higher number of accidents and aggressions in the population. The mid-facial third was the anatomical region of more incidence of injuries, fundamentally of the soft tissue and combined injuries, which had a relationship with its predominant clinical findings.
