ABSTRACT
The acquisition of movement during the apprenticeship of a musical instrument is a product of plasticity of the nervous system, which results in the automation of motor patterns. Excessive tension is related to problems both of sonority and of health. To become a musician many times means to become a professor of instrument, which is a craft learnt in practice that hides difficulties such as speaking about movement and music. The objective was to investigate the training of orchestral strings in order to identify themes and moments that can be used to promote health and to prevent painful musculoskeletal disorders. It is an exploratory, qualitative research of analytical-descriptive nature, using as method observation of classes and interviews with instrument teachers. The research was approved by the Ethics in Research Committee and all the participants gave their informed consent. Observations were made at the Music School of the Estate of São Paulo EMESP Tom Jobim. Subjects were orchestral strings teachers. Data were analyzed using the method of Contents Analysis. Interviewees expatiate about the body, their instrument, movement and its teaching, about material aspects of performing music , the teacher and the student, and about working as a musician. Themes identified were organized according to two theoretical backgrounds theories about movement control and the functioning of the brain, and about the collective construction of knowledge. Adopting a non-dualist perspective of body and mind, the discussion approaches the development of automatisms and motor stereotypes; the control over precision and strength used in performance; the planning of movement and the use of referential for action; the role of repetition and the relationship between attention and tension; the characteristics of teachers speech about movement; the constitution of prudence knowledge when obtaining know-how...
