ABSTRACT
The Latin American Psychiatric Association (APAL) was born as an initiative of distinguished Latin American psychiatrists in 1950 and became a reality in 1960, with the intention of creating an organization that would allow the development of a current of thought to expose the ideas of Latin American psychiatry in the world panorama, encourage education and research and "dictate guidelines in the description of the disease, its detection, treatment and rehabilitation". In this long road, which has had difficulties, it has become the organization that brings together the psychiatric societies of the 21 countries of the continent and has become an advisor to the mental health policies of the different governments in many of them.
