Características bio-psicosociales del adolescente / Bio-psychosocial characteristics of the adolescent

RESUMEN

La adolescencia es la transformación de la niñez a la adultez. Este período bio-psicosocial (10 a 20 años) comprende gran cantidad de modificaciones corporales. Hay un rápido crecimiento, cambios en las proporciones y formas corporales, y la madurez sexual. Está caracterizada por la búsqueda de identidad, necesidad de intelectualizar y fantasear, crisis religiosas, desubicación temporal, fluctuaciones de humor, contradicciones de la conducta, tendencia grupal y separación progresiva de los padres. Los adolescentes enfrentan distintos riesgos como embarazo y maternidad precoz, elevados índices de mortalidad por accidentes, homicídio y suicídio, condicionados por patrones conductuales como el consumo excesivo de alcohol, abuso de sustancias, actividad sexual y de pandillas. Un buen manejo se debe realizar teniendo en cuenta las características de esta etapa; es esencial que el compromiso no sólo sea por parte de un área, sino de todos los profesionales de la salud. El objetivo del presente artículo de revisión es proporcionar al odontólogo los conocimientos generales sobre la adolescencia, para así poder entender la complejidad de esta etapa y tratar a los adolescentes de manera adecuada.

ABSTRACT

The adolescence is the transformation from childhood to adulthood. This bio-psychosocial period (10 to 20 years) comprises many body modifications. There is rapid growth, changes in body proportions and shapes, and sexual maturity. It is characterized by the search for identity, need to intellectualize and fantasize, religious crisis, temporal dislocation, mood swings, behavior contradictions, group tendencies and progressive separation of the parents. The adolescents face different risks like pregnancy and maternity and high mortality because of accidents, murder and suicide. Conditioned by patterns of behavior as heavy drinking, substance abuse, sexual and gang activity. A good management should be done taking into consideration the characteristics of this stage; it is essential that the commitment be not only from an area, but also from all health professionals. The purpose of this review article is to provide the dentist general knowledge about adolescence, in order to understand the complexity of this stage and treat the adolescents appropriately.
