Valoração do dano odontológico: avaliação da função mastigatória / Dental damage valuation: masticatory function assessment

RESUMO

O sistema estomatognático desempenha funções complexas vitais para o organismo como a mastigação, a deglutição, a respiração e a fonação. A função mastigatória é desempenhada pelos dentes conjuntamente com outras estruturas anatômicas, maxila, mandíbula, articulação têmporo-mandibular, músculos faciais e mastigatórios, glândulas salivares, língua, lábios e bochecha. As perdas dentárias sempre determinam um prejuízo permanente à vítima, pois não se pode pretender que os dentes artificiais ou mesmo desvitalizados tenham igual valor funcional. O Objetivo desse estudo é avaliar a função mastigatória em indivíduos com perdas dentárias utilizando as unidades dentárias funcionais como index. Para tanto 80 indivíduos foram submetidos à mastigação de um sistema para avaliação da eficiência mastigatória, composto por cápsulas de PVC, apresentando em seu interior grânulos compostos de pectina, caseína e o corante fucsina. Após a mastigação, a fucsina liberada em seu interior é indicada espectrofotometricamente. Diferenças entre o número de FTUs e a eficiência mastigatória foram observadas (p0,01), a idade também apresentou influência na eficiência mastigatória (p0,01), já o gênero não influencia na mastigação. Conclui-se que a eficiência mastigatória está totalmente relacionada com o número de FTUs podendo a metodologia ser aplicada na avaliação do dano odontológico.

ABSTRACT

Through the stomatognathic system we perform a number of complex vital functions such as mastication, swallowing, breathing and phonation. The masticatory function is accomplished by the teeth along with other anatomic structures (maxilla, mandible, mandible-temporal articulation, facial and masticatory muscles, saliva glands, tongues, lips and cheeks). Dental losses always represent a permanent harm to the victim since it cannot be assumed that artificial or even devitalized teeth shall keep equivalent functional role. The aim of the study is to assess masticatory function in individuals who have had tooth losses by applying functional tooth units as an index. 80 individuals were submitted to a PVC capsules mastication which contain pellets composed of a mixture of pectin and casein and the coloring agent fuchsine. After chewing the capsules, they are opened and their content is diluted in 5ml water, then they are filtered and the resulting solution is analyzed spectrum-photometrically. Differences between the number of FTUs and masticatory efficiency were found (p0,01), also, age has shown to influence masticatory efficiency (p0,01), however, genders have not interfered with mastication. Therefore, masticatory efficiency is totally related to the number of FTUs enabling the methodology to be applied for dental damage.
