ABSTRACT
Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease, with high prevalence. It is characterized by destruction of periodontal tissues, leading to bone resorption and to tooth loss. Modifiers of the healing response such as growth factors, has been applied in the treatment of sequelae of the disease to achieve the regeneration of lost periodontal and peri-implant tissues. Recent research in animals and humans have shown promising results with the use of growth factor derived from platelets and bone morphogenetic protein for the treatment of bone defects, lesions in bifurcations and to assist rehabilitations with dental implants. These results enabled the development and launch of two commercial products. Therefore this review aims to critically comment on the scope and results of clinical use of these products.
