ABSTRACT
A descriptive and cross sectional study of 20 patients (20 eyes) in whom a penetrating corneal transplantation was practiced, with a favorable clinical course, in the Ophthalmological Center from "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba was carried out from January to June, 2014, and then they were examined with confocal microscopy, in order to describe the characteristics of the corneal tissue. Among the selected variables there were age, sex and cause of indication for the penetrating keratoplasty; as long as, the predominant results were age group 60-69 years, male sex and vesicular keratopathy as main cause for the transplantation. Also, the most frequent changes found in the confocal microscopy were decrease in the number of endothelial cells, increase in polimegatism and alteration in the endothelial pleomorfism.
