La ceguera y baja visión en el mundo:: ¿un problema médico o social? / Blindness and blurred vision in the word: medical or social problems

RESUMEN

En el trabajo se realiza un análisis de la ceguera y la baja visión y sus causas sociales. Las últimas investigaciones indican que el número de personas que padecen ceguera evitable va en aumento. Los costos que suponen la educación, la rehabilitación y la pérdida de productividad por causa de la ceguera tienen importantes repercusiones en las personas, las familias, las comunidades y las naciones, en particular en las zonas más pobres del mundo. Se compara la necesidad social con el avance de las características de la Oftalmología dentro de las Ciencias Médicas y su dinámica en cuanto al desarrollo tecnológico. El objetivo final constituye la valoración de las condiciones que desde el punto de vista social y político, científico y tecnológico han dado origen a la Misión Milagro.

ABSTRACT

In the work it is carried out an analysis of the blindness and the drop vision and their social causes. The last investigations indicate that the number of people that suffer avoidable blindness goes in increase. The costs that suppose the education, the rehabilitation and the loss of productivity by reason of the blindness have important repercussions in people, the families, the communities and the nations, in particular in the poorest areas in the world. The social necessity is compared with the advance of the characteristics of the Ophthalmology inside the Medical Sciences and its dynamics as for the technological development. The final objective constitutes the valuation of the conditions that it have given origin to the Mission Miracle from the social and political, scientific and technological point of view.
