ABSTRACT
A qualitative, descriptive, field research that aimed to identify the difficulties and challenges in relation to nursing management in an Emergency Unit, as well to report the management activities performed by nurses. For data collection we used a semi-structured interview containing six open questions held with six nurses who work in the emergency room of a hospital in the city of Cascavel, Paraná, Brazil. The results indicate that the activities of nurses are geared almost exclusively to the care, leaving aside the supervision and the management role of the professional, justified mainly by the lack of manpower correlated with high demand and complexity of the sector. We conclude that nursing is facing constant barriers related to the quality of care and developed work, in which the lack of professional and the stress level become difficult problems.
