ABSTRACT

The National Food and Nutrition Policy (PNAN), approvedin 1999, integrates the efforts of the Brazilian State, which througha set of public policies determines to respect, protect, promote andprovide human rights for health and nutrition.The Brazilian population, in recent decades, has undergonemajor social transformations that have resulted in changes in theirstandards of health and food consumption. These transformationshave caused an impact on reducing poverty and social exclusion, andconsequently hunger and malnutrition. On the other hand, there hasbeen a steep increase in overweight in all segments of the population,pointing to a new set of problems related to food and nutrition.Upon completion of ten years of publication of PNAN, aprocess of updating and improving its bases and guidelines wasstarted in order to consolidate the policy as a reference for the newchallenges to be faced in the field of Food and Nutrition within theUnified Health System (SUS).In partnership with the Intersectoral Committee for Foodand Nutrition (CIAN) of the National Health Council, the Ministry ofHealth conducted a broad and democratic process of updating andimproving the policy through 26 State Seminars and the NationalSeminar on Food and Nutrition - PNAN 10 years, which includedthe presence of state and local health counselors, civil societyorganizations, health worker associations, state and municipal Nutrition and Primary Health Care managers, state councilors ofFood and Nutrition Security, Collaborating Centers for Food andNutrition associated do universities and experts in public policiesof health, food and nutrition...
