ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to determine whether periodontal disease (EPO) is associated with endothelial dysfunction and systemic inflammation. We performed a cross-sectional, descriptive study, 31 male participants, aged between 25 and 50 years and dividedin to two groups with and without EPO, according to oral examination by a dentist dedicated to that purpose. Both groups were measured cardiovascular risk factors, atherosclerotic burden, ankle-brachial index, carotid Doppler ultrasound to measure carotid intima-media, echocardiogra. The sample was composed of 27 patients, after excluding 3 patients. In the first group 15 (55.6%) had EPO and the other 12 (44.4%) without EPO, the average age of the sample was 39 ± 8 years; of lipid variables; only total cholesterol was statistically significant between the analyzed groups being numerically higher in the EPO group compared to the group without EPO (p = 0.039); There is a statistically significant relationship between total cholesterol and EPO, so it could be established as a cardiovascular risk factor or subclinical cardiovascular disease in young men.
