RESUMO

Neste artigo, nós revisamos os diferentes aspectos da história natural da asma e o que se conhece até o momento sobre os diferentes tipos de fenótipos de sibilos na criança. Asma é uma doença que se manifesta clinicamente por tosse e/ou sibilos. Muitas crianças apresentam sintomas nos primeiros 3 ou 4 anos de vida, e tornam-se assintomáticas após este período; 70% das que sibilam antes dos 3 anos de idade, não são atópicas e param de sibilar nesta idade. Por outro lado, crianças atópicas podem continuar a sibilar por longos períodos. Crianças não atópicas podem também sibilar devido a um mecanismo relacionado ao controle do tônus das vias aéreas, que provavelmente é relacionado a infecções respiratórias virais.

ABSTRACT

In this article we review aspects of the natural history of asthma during childhood and the current knowledge on different wheeze phenotypes. Asthma is a disease clinically expressed by recurrent cough and/or wheeze. Most children will present with symptoms in the first three or four years of life and will get better after that. There are different wheeze during the first three years of life and not after are most likely not atopic and account for over 70% ao all children with these symptoms at that age. Atopic children will most likely continue to wheeze for longer periods. Non-atopic children can also wheeze due to a mechanism related to control of airway tone, that is somehow related to viral respiratory infections.
