ABSTRACT
From an esthetic point of view, titanium abutments are not acceptable, especially if used in patients with thin soft tissues. To overcome this situation, ceramic abutments with high flexural resistance were developed. The aim of this literature review was to describe the properties of ceramic abutments, emphasizing the most common reason for failures. If was concluded that yttria stabilized zirconia have suitable properties to be used as abutment; two-part zirconia abutments have better mechanical behavior than one-part zirconia abutments; internal connection abutments have better mechanical behavior than external connection abutments.
