The kangaroo mother care was created in 1978 byColombian physicians in response to the high mortality rate amongpremature infants, and Brazil has adopted this method as a kind ofneonatal care in 2007, after approval by the Health Ministry Objective:
To evaluate the physiological responses in preterm underweightinfant who underwent the kangaroo mother care method. Methods:
We studied 24 preterm infants who were stable, with gestationalage between 24 and 37 weeks, weighing less than 2,500 g, withoutneurological complications, or respiratory, cardiac and congenitalmalformations. Th e babies were subjected to the method 60 minutesafter administration of diet and assessments were performedbefore and 30 minutes after the intervention, for 3 consecutive days.Th e variables studied were heart rate and respiratory rate, oxygensaturation, body temperature, mean arterial pressure and weight. Results:
Th ere were signifi cant diff erences in respiratory rate (p =0.01), peripheral oxygen saturation (p < 0.001), body temperature(p = 0.02) and mean arterial pressure (p = 0.01). While the heartrate (p = 0.13) and weight (p = 0.55), have no signifi cant diff erences. Conclusion:
Th e method promoted the PN decreased respirationrate and mean arterial pressure, increased oxygen saturation, andnormalization of body temperature, while the other variables didnot change signifi cantly...
