RESUMO
Este trabalho consiste em uma revisão de literatura sobre os valores de CPOD registrados no Brasil, de 1980 a 2010, e sobre os fatores que influenciaram a prevalência de cárie no país e, consequentemente, a alteração do índice, neste período. Foram analisados artigos científicos (das bases de dados BVS, SciELO, e PubMed), livros renomados sobre o tema e sites oficiais brasileiros (Portal da Saúde e Anvisa). A redução do CPOD nacional mostrou-se expressiva, pois a prevalência de cárie encontrava-se muito alta em 1 980 ( CPOD = 7,3) e t ornou-se b aixa e m 2 010 (CPOD = 2,1). O principal fator para tal redução foi o aumento das ações de promoção de saúde e prevenção, sobretudo após a implantação do Programa de Saúde da Família, em 1994.
ABSTRACT
This paper consists of a literature review about the values of CPOD recorded in Brazil, from 1980 to 2010, and the influential factors regarding the prevalence of caries in the country and consequently the change of the index in during this period. Scientific articles (from BVS, SciELO and PubMed databases), renowned books on the subject, and Brazilian official websites (Portal da Saúde and ANVISA) were analyzed. National CPOD showed significant reduction, since caries prevalence was very high in 1980 (CPOD = 7.3) a nd b ecame l ower i n 2 010 ( CPOD = 2.1). The main reason for this reduction was the increasing of the health promotion and preventive actions, especially after the implementation of the Family Health Program, in 1994.
