The Role of HAART and CD4 Count in HIV Retinopathy

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)infection and Aquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)is a global pandemic. Study aimed to record the retinalmanifestations in patients with HIV according to their CD4count and HAART status.Material and methods: A total of 100 patients with HIVwere examined over a period of 7 months. The patientswere selected on the basis of confirmed sero-positive HIV.They were thouroghly examined under mydriasis withindirect ophthalmoscope and fundus photographs were takenwhenever possible.Results: 32 patients (32%) were found having fundusmanifestations. Out of which majority had hiv microangiopathyand few had retinitis or choroiditis.Conclusion: There is higher incidence of retinal findings innon-HAART group and in patients with CD4<100/ml in bothgroups and HAART associated with reduced incidence ofretinal manifestations.
