Article | IMSEAR | ID: sea-202796
ABSTRACT

Introduction:

Burkholderia cepacia gram-negative bacillus isan opportunistic environmental pathogens that can be found insoil, water and contaminated antiseptic solutions and parenteralmedications causing infections in immunocompromisedindividuals with a significant mortality rate.Case report We report a 70-year-old-man diabetic, fishermanby occupation with signs and symptoms of meningitis andlater diagnosed with Burkholderia cepacia meningitis. Patientwas successfully treated with intravenous Meropenem andrecovered to normal state of health. Burkholderia cepacia isan emerging cause of meningitis with limited antibacterialtreatment options. However, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazoleremains an effective agent which is an excellent alternativetherapy.

Conclusion:

Burkholderia cepacia is a rare cause of meningitisas shown in this case. Burkholderia cepacia is commonlyisolated in immunocompromised patients. Burkholderiacepacia is known to show complex antimicrobial susceptibilityprofile in conjunction with its ability to evade multipleantimicrobials makes its management quite complicated.
