ABSTRACT

Background:

Themainobjectiveoftreatingbednetswithinsecticidesistoaffectthemeanlongevityofthemainvectorpopulation,andconsequentlythevectordensityandsporozoiterates.

Objective:

Thisstudyaimedatestablishingtheimpactofinsecticide-treatedbednets(ITNs)onthelongevityandabilitytotransmitmalariasporozoitesbythevectorspeciesasanassessmentofeffectivenessoftheITNinterventioninKamulidistrict,Uganda.

Methods:

Indoorhuman-bitingmosquitoesweretrappedinthreerandomlyselectedhousesintwoseparatenightsusingbattery-operatedCDClighttrapsinbothintervention(withITNs)andnon-interventionvillages(withoutITNs).Thefemaleanophelinesweredissectedandtheirparityrates andPlasmodiumfalciparumsporozoitepositivitycomparedbetweenthetwozones.AsporozoiteEnzyme-LinkedImmunoSorbentAssay,ELISA,wasusedtodetectthepresenceofP.falciparumsporozoitesintheparousvectorsinbothzones.TheparityandP.falciparumsporozoiteinfectivitywerecomparedbetweenthetwozonesusingtheKruskal-WallisranksumtestoftheR-Statisticssoftware.

Results:
