The postoperative secondary xerostomia′s uncomfortable experience of patients with fating in gastrointestinal surgery:a qualitative study / 中国实用护理杂志

ABSTRACT
Objective To explore the postoperative secondary xerostomia′s uncomfortable experience of patients with long fating in gastrointestinal surgery, providing basis for medical staff to understand comfort needs of patients and to take targeted nursing intervention. Methods The phenomenological methodology was used in the study. Totally 12 patients with postoperative secondary xerostomia′s uncomfortable experience were interviewed, and tape recording was used. The data was analyzed by Colaizzi analysis method. Results Four themes were extracted emotional response to patients with postoperative xerostomia, uncomfortable experience of mouth, the insufficient cognition of fating in perioperative period, desire for attention to solve the problem of dry mouth. Conclusions Medical staff should strengthen the awareness of the patients′experience with secondary and temporary dry mouth, and improve the nursing intervention measures according to need, in order to increase patients′comfort and to promote them recover soon.
