Combined traditional Chinese and western medicine for treatment of ulcerative colitis: a report of 65 cases / 解放军医学杂志

ABSTRACT
Objective To evaluate the treatment of ulcerative colitis with combined Chinese oral herbs and herbs enema with western medicine. Methods 105 patients with ulcerative colitis diagnosed by colonoscopy were randomly divided into two groups traditional combining with western medicine treatment group (treatment group) with 65 patients, and western medicine treatment group (control group) with 40 patients. In the treatment group the treatment consisted of oral herbs and enema herbs as well as sulfasalazine, while in the control group the patients received sulfasalazine only. After two courses of treatment, the immediate cure rate and cure rate after 2 years were assessed. Results The immediate cure rate and total efficacious rate of treatment group were 52% and 94.64% respectively, while those of control group were 36.2% and 82.5%, respectively.
