ABSTRACT

Objective:

To evaluate the efficacies and adverse reactions of the chemotherapy with capecitabine combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy with cisplatin contrast to intraperitoneal injection of lentinan in the treatment of elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer and malignant ascites.

Methods:

Sixty-three elderly patients with advanced gastric carcinoma and malignant ascites were randomly divided into two groups the study group receiving oral capecitabine combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy with cisplatin, and the control group receiving oral capecitabine combined with intraperitoneal injection of lentinan. The treatment was repeated every 21-28 days. All patients received 2 cycles of chemotherapy. Efficacy and toxicities were evaluated after 2 cycles of treatment.

Results:

The control rates [complete response (CR)+partial response (PR) for malignant ascites in the study group and the control group were 75.8% and 50.0%, respectively; the disease control rates for measurable lesions [(CR+PR+stable disease (SD)] were 66.7% and 53.3%, respectively; the improved rates for KPS were 69.7% and 66.7%, respectively. The main toxicities were nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, myelo- suppression and hand-foot syndrome, the adverse reactions for most patients were grades I-II. No patients died from the adverse reactions.

Conclusion:

The method of oral capecitabine combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy with cisplatin in the treatment of elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer was effective and safty, and can improve the life quality of the patients. It should be widely spreaded in clinics.
