ABSTRACT

Objective:

By analyzing National Natural Science Foundation of China′s (NSFC′s) application and funding situations of the key program in the field of oncology from 2014 to 2018, taking into considerations of the Project areas funded each year, to explore the development trends of oncology research, from which might inform the selection of research areas and content for both researchers and research administrative personnel.

Methods:

Searching the key program information funded by Division VII of Health Sciences (Oncology Division) from the management information system during the period of 2014 and 2018.

Results:

During the five years, a total number of 472 key program applications were received by the Oncology Division, among which 74 were funded with total funding of 217.32 million RMB. Twenty-one Project areas were approved with concentration on the occurrence, development of tumors, as well as the tumor therapies. The funded number of different project areas varied a lot.

Conclusions:

The key scientific problems and the focus areas of oncology research that need to be solved urgently in China were revealed by the Project areas of key program. Although the high-level basic and applied basic research were evolving fast, some research areas that not well studied yet still need to pay more attention, more combination of basic and applied basic research should be developed, to further improve the transformation effectiveness of basic research.
