ABSTRACT
An elderly, unimmunized, female patient underwent an abdomino-perineal resection operation for a Dukes class B rectal carcinoma; but, developed postoperative stenosis of the terminal sigmoid colostomy. Another operation to relieve the colostomy stricture was performed but, the patient developed fatal tetanus after the procedureThis case illustrate the importance of post-opertive tetanus as a potentially fatal complication in the aged. As it is easier to prevent than to treat, provision of prophylaxis for the patient at risks (such as those undergoing gastro-intestinal surgery) is the most important component of management.
