ABSTRACT
Mastication among six irradiated completely edentulous patients with xerostomia were studied by measuring the masticatory efficiency and performance to determine their ability to chew foods after using a saliva substitute filled in reservoirs incorporated in lower dentures. Significant improvements in masticatory function after using a saliva substitute were realized. The patients were able to chew foods to a more finer particle size, faster with fewer strokes and less muscular effort. It was concluded that with a saliva substitute in cases of xerostomia, the denture is more comfortable, more efficient and less damaging to the supporting tissues
