diagnostic role of transmission electron microscopy in formaldehyde-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue of problematic cases of true-cut needle biopsy of retroperitoneal round cell tumors in children

ABSTRACT

Formaldehyde-fixed and paraffin embedded tissues of four cases of true-cut needle biopsy of retroperitoneal round cell tumors of children of debatable nature were studied by transmission electron microscopy to evaluate its role in the resolution of the problems. Transmission electron microscopy appeared useful in the different diagnosis of such neoplasms through demonstration of specific features. The fixative used and paraffin-embedding caused little alteration of fine structures that were generally preserved. Hence, direct correlation of light and electron microscopic findings was feasible
