Effect of iron supplementation on iron stores in pregnant women

ABSTRACT
Serum ferritin and other hematologic parameters were measured in 80 pregnant and 20 non-pregnant women. Half of the pregnant women were on iron supplementation while the other half without iron supplementation. The values of all the hematologic parameters were significantly les in unsupplemented pregnant women as compared to those in supplemented pregnant women. Iron supplementation had significant effect on the iron stores in pregnant women. Therefore, there is need of routine iron supplementation during pregnancy
