Nurses attitudes toward the elderly people

ABSTRACT
It was assumed that attitudes held by nurses will help to determine the quality of care given to old people. One hundred diploma and baccalaureate nurses who are a permanent staff in the medical and surgical units in the medical research institute and the main university hospitals, in Alexandria university were participated in the study. Data were collected using the older person Questionnaire [OPQ] to determine nurses attitude towards the elderly people. The results revealed that nurses have a negative attitude toward elderly people. Age factor did not indicate a significant difference with nurses attitude while level of education indicated a significant difference at 5% level. It was recommended that nursing education and inservice training programs should stress the importance of gerontology
