ABSTRACT
This study includes 100 cases of dry perforations of the ear drum. Four types of grafting materials were utilized in the repair of such perforations, namely temporalis fascia, trageal perichondrium, sclera and dura. Each was used in 25 cases. We performed permeatal myringoplasty applying the underlay technique. Success rate was 90% after a follow up period of two months. Statistical studies of the results showed no significant difference as regards to the type of material used. However, there was significant improvement of hearing in lower frequencies, rather than in higher frequencies. Moreover, hearing was considerably improved in all cases of posterior perforations as well as moderately side anterior perforations. The permeatal approach, using the underlay technique was found to be easier, quicker and with an excellent prognosis. The four grafting materials used were considered suitable for such an operation, with rather similar success rates
