ABSTRACT
Papaverine hydrochloride [smooth muscle relaxant], phentolamine mesylate [alpha-adrenergic blocker], and prostaglandin El [vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant] were combined to produce a potent vasoactive drug therapy for use in pharmacological erection program. The vasoactive drug combination has been used in 62 patients for diagnostic testing and subsequent treatment. A dose of 1 ml of the preparation containing papaverine 6 mg, phentolamine 150 ug, prostaglandin E1 10 ug [pH = 3.8] has proved effectiveness in the majority of patients with mild to moderate arteriogenic and/or venogenic, and diabetic impotence. For patients with neurogenic erectile dysfunction half of the dose was used. There was no report of pain with injection after the addition of 0.03 meq of sodium bicarbonate to the solution titrating the pH into 7.1. This regimen was effective, with one case only of prolonged erection, but no pain report was perceived, and to date no fibrosis or plaques have been found
