ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to identify various congenital heart disorders in infants of diabetic mothers as early as possible using echocardiography. Evaluation of the structural defects and functional changes in the heart of these babies with discussion of possible etiologic factors was carried on. The study included 51 infants of diabetic mothers. These babies were assessed by complete clinical examination. It was found that, the commonest anomalies included left to right shunt [65.2%], functional valve regurge [58.7%] and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy [27.7%]. Significant affection of left ventricular end diastolic dimension [LVEDD] and inter-ventricular septum thickness [IVS] was also detected. Both symptomatic and asymptomatic IDMS were affected. Most of the lesions showed partial and/or complete regression at subsequent follow up. No correlation was found between the degree of maternal metabolic control and the occurrence of cardiac anomalies being of higher incidence in the infants of good metabolic control in the studied cases
