ABSTRACT
Fasting serum levels of total cholesterol [TC], triglycerides [TG], high density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], low density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], apolipoprotein A-1 [apo A-1] and apolipoprotein B [apo B] in 42 patients [28 males and 14 females] undergoing elective economy angiography, were correlated with angiographically documented coronary artery disease [CAD]. Simple linear regression analysis unpaired student t-test, and analysis of variance [ANOVA] were used to compare the means. 28 subjects had CAD while, 14 subjects had normal coronaries. The patients with CAD had a significant increase in the levels of TG, LDL-C [P <0.05], TC/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios [P <0.01], apo B and apo B/apo A-1 ratio [P <0.01] and a significant decrease in HDL-C [P <0.05] and apo A-1 [P <0.01] when compared to subjects with normal coronary arteries. Apo A-1 discriminated CAD equally in males [P <0.01] and females [P <0.01]. Apo B discriminated CAD better in females [P <0.01] than in males [P <0.05]. Out of 13 patients with desirable serum cholesterol level [<200 mg/dl], 12 patients [92%] had HDL-C <35 mg/dl. Out of 21 patients who had desirable serum triglyceride level [0.200 mg/dl], 16 patients [76%] had HDL-C <35 mg/dl. Out of 21 patients with serum HDL-C <35 mg/dl, 19 patients [91%] had apo A-l <125 mg/dl and out of the 14 patients who had LDL-C <130 mg/dl 9 patients [74%] had apo B >135 mg/dl
