Clinical use of enamel matrix derivative proteins [emdogain] in periodontal regeneration

ABSTRACT

A new product called Emdogain[R] was recently launched in the US by BIORA company for the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects. Emdogain[R] is an enamel matrix protein, which has been demonstrated to be involved in the formation of acellular cementum as well as having the potential to induce regeneration of the periodontium. Clinical studies with Emdogain[R] demonstrated clinical attachment gain and interproximal alveolar bone gain in patients with moderate to severe periodontitis and intrabony pockets. The use and application of Emdogain[R] is described in this article. Studies are being conducted in the US to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of Emdogain[R] in the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects in periodontitis patients
