Hepatitis B surface antigen study in professional and volunteer blood donors

ABSTRACT
A Study was conducted in total 2242 cases which belongs to two different groups. Professional blood donors [PBD] in which there were 1278 indi viduals, whereas in volunteer blood donors [VBD] there were 964 individuals. All were tested for Hepatitis 'B' surface antigen by Enzyme Immuno Assay [EIA]. It was observed from this study that out of total screened cases 5.5% were seropositive. In PBD group there were 9.0% seropositive cases as compared to 0.8% cases in VBD. It is recommended that screening of each blood bag, vaccination against HBV and preventive measures dissemination through media to overcome serious consequence to HBV infection. Old saying is still holds good 'prevention is better than cure
