ABSTRACT
Regarding the prevalence of deep vein thrombosis [DVT] and it's serious complications and side effects finding a noninvasive, sensitive and quick diagnostic method seems to be necessary. To compare the results of color doppler sonography and venography as a primary diagnostic method for DVT so as to give a practical guideline to screen the patients. Through an interventional study a total number of 45 patients suspected to DVT were assessed with color doppler sonography and then contrast venography was done and finally findings were compared by Chi square test [1996-1997]. The diagnostic sensitivity and specifity of color doppler sonography for femoral and popliteal thrombosis is comparable with venography [100%] while in calf DVT, color doppler sonography has less sensitivity [23%] compared with venography [100%]. Ruptured baker cyst and calf muscle hematomas can not be diagnosed by venography, but color doppler sonography has very high sensitivity and specifity. The findings indicate that color doppler sonography can be a primary noninvasive and quick diagnostic method and can replace venography on DVT diagnosis
