Modified buccal myomucosal pedicled flap in repair of wide defect cleft palate.

This study was carried out at the Pediatric Surgery Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Al-Azhar University from January 1999 to May 2002 to present an experience in the treatment of 40 children aging from 1-2 years old with wide defect cleft palate. Twenty children were exposed to buccal myomucosal pedicled flap to repair the defect [group A] and the other twenty children were exposed to modified two- flap palatoplasty technique [group B]. In group A, one child developed small palatal fistula, one developed wide palatal fistula and the other eighteen children healed without complications. In group B, two boys developed partial disruption, two developed palatal fistula of the wide type and the other sixteen boys healed without complications. In group A, in the eighteen healed children, by follow up, only one child developed nasal regurge and nasal tone in phonation, but the other seventeen children were completely normal. In group B, from the sixteen healed children, two children developed nasal regurge and nasal tone in phonation, but the remaining fourteen children were completely normal
