ABSTRACT
Total serum protien levels and clinical features were studied in a randomly selected group of 30 first episode and 30 `chronic schizophrenics. The results were compared with IS normal controls. The most frequent symptoms were somatic passivity [66%] and voice commenting [40%]. Total serum protien level in both first episode and chronic schizophrenics was in normal range and comparable with the controls. Serum albumin was reduced in first episode followed by chronic schizophrenics and controls. First episode schizophrenic patients had significantly increased levels of gamma globulin as compared to chronic schizophrenics [P<0.01] and normal controls [P<0.01]. The results indicate that schizophrenia might have some connection with alteration in serum gamma globulin levels and the possibility that altered gamma globulin level plays a role in schizophrenia, can not be ruled out
