RESUMO
Knowledge into the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis has promising insights into the prevention of atherothrombotic brain infarction, particularly the reduction of known risk factors, including cholesterol reduction. or at-risk individuals, concerted efforts should be made to educate patients of the necessity to decrease risk factors sich as hypertension and smoking, and institute exercise and weinht reduction programs. Diabetes mellitus must be optimally controlled and elevated cholesterol should be reduced. For middle-aged patients, the total cholesterol should be decreased to <200 mg/dl and for the elderly, <240 mg/dl. The reality remains that the best therapy for strokes is its prevention
