RESUMEN
The aim of this study was to establish the principal cause of teeth lossing in the adult community aged between 35-44 and 65-74 in Santiago, Metropolitana Región. The clinical histories of the patients included in an investigation carried out in 8 communities of the Metropolitan Región, and in a private medical-dental center in the Tabancura and Ñuñoa communities were cheeked. The sample was of 1.096 individuals, with a total of 5.207 lossed teeth.

Results:

the 77,17 por ciento of the total extracted teeth were lost because of dental decay (pcaries and because of periodontal disease were similar (54,38 por ciento and 49,62 por ciento respectively) (p<0.05). The women group shows a high frequency of teeth loss because of both dental decay (52,84 por ciento) and periodontal desease (54,75 por ciento) in relation with men group. The low social-economic level shows the highest amount of dental extractions (70,29 por ciento), followed by the medium-low social-economic level (22,14 por ciento) and then the high social-economic level (7,57 por ciento). In all levels that were studied the dental decay was the principal cause of tooth extraction (p<0.05). The subjects with basic education represent the 55,00 por ciento of the teeth extractions, the subjects with medium education represents the 20,76 por ciento, the without education group represent the 17,03 por ciento and the superior education level represent the 7,21 por ciento of the dental extractions (p<0.05), besides, in the four educational groups there were more teeth lost because of dental decay than because of periodontal discase (p<0.05). In conclusion the dental decay is the principal cause of teeth lost in the age groups of 35-44 and 65-74 years
