ABSTRACT
In 24 patients 27 catheters where inserted for prolonged ambulatory antibiotic therapy in cases of chronic infections. The technique for insertion of the catheter is described, the protocol we have for nursing and patient care of the catheter is presented. No complications related to the use of central venous catheters for prolonged period of time presented in this group of patients. This technique allow patients to be al home with the appropiate dose of I/V antibiotics. We consider this is a safe and useful way of dealing with the problem of prolonged I/V use of antibiotics in chronic infections
