ABSTRACT

Chagas disease is an important tropical disease that affects Latin America, where 25 per cent of the population is at risk. It was discovered in 1909 by Carlos Chagas, a Brazilian physician and researcher. Since then, the disease has been the object of scientific and political initiatives in Brazil. They resulted not only in the successful control of the disease transmission, but in a strong and internationalized scientific community.
