Background:
The authors present a comparative study among two groups of patients that were submitted to the mastectomy and breast reconstruction with TRAM flap. Objective:
Inonegroupwereusedtwosuctiondrains, neinthebreastregionandtheotheroneintheabdomen. In the second group it was used just one suction drain in the breast region with stich fixation of the abdominal cutaneous flap in the muscular wall. Methods:
We considered the incidence of complications, the permanence period of the drains, the drainage volume that was obtained and the final result of the surgery. Results:
We observed that there were no significative differences between both groups.Discussion:
This pilot study demonstrates, and the statistical findings confirm it, that it is possible to use just one drain in the breast region, as long as it is associated to fixation of abdominal cutaneous flap in the abdominal muscular wall in patient that had breast reconstruction after mastectomy with the TRAM flap. Conclusions:
This new approach did not increase the incidence of complication and reduced costs as well as the procedure became more confortable and easy for the patients.
