This study intented to verify prevalence of osteoarthritis, falls and the relationship with the balance of the elderly. Materials and Methods:
Study descriptive cross. Sample of 101 elderly of both sexes, belonging to NEPEF/ FACVEST - Lages, SC. It was instruments an interview on the presence of osteoarthritis and the occurrence of falls in the last si months, and to assess the balance was used to EMTI-Scale Motor to Third Idade. The data were analyzed in SPSS version 13.0. It was used to verify the normality of the test data "Kolmogorov-Smirnov", and for analysis of the non-parametric tests "Chi-square" with the level of significance set at 5%.Results:
Sample of 101 elderly people, aged between 60 and 106 years (X=77.05), with 38 men and 63 women, 39.6% (40) have osteoarthritis and 29.7% (30) have suffered in recent fall six months; on the classification of the balance 71.29% (72) "lower", 12.87% (13) "normal" and 15.84% (16) "higher". There was statistically significant relationship between the occurrence of falls and balance (p=0025), with 90% of the elderly who have suffered falls of a balance "lower", according to EMTI1 and also between the occurrence of falls and the presence of osteoarthritis (p=0023), because 56% of elderly people who have suffered falling osteoarthritis. There was no significant relationship between the balance and the presence of osteoarthritis in the elderly searched (p=0.39), but 77.5% of the elderly who have osteoarthritis also have a balance classified as "lower".Conclusion:
There data corroborate the geriatric literature. There was a relationship between the prevalence of osteoarthritis, falls and balance.
