Avaliação das características oclusais dos pacientes respiradores bucais e nasais / Evaluation of the occlusal characteristics of mouth and nose breather patients

RESUMO

Por mais de cem anos, muitos estudos revelaram os efeitos da respiração bucal no desenvolvimento craniofacial e na dentição. Esses estudos relatam que a respiração bucal exerce um efeito significativo no desenvolvimento de más oclusões; entretanto, existem controvérsias. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a influência da respiração bucal no desenvolvimento de más oclusões a partir da análise dos modelos de estudo de 40 pacientes, sendo 20 respiradores bucais e 20 nasais comparando as características oclusais dos dois grupos. Os resultados do presente trabalho mostraram que a respiração bucal apresentou uma fraca associação com o desenvolvimento de más oclusões.

ABSTRACT

For more than one hundred years, many studies showed the effects of mouth breathing on craniofacial growth and dentition. These studies revealed that mouth breathing exerts a significant effect on the development of malocclusions, besides, there are controversies. This study has the objective to analyze the influence of mouth breathing on the development of malocclusions. There were analyzed model casts of 40 patients, 20 mouth breathers and 20 nose breathers to compare the occlusal characteristics of the two groups. The results of the present studyrevealed that mouth breathing showed a weak association with the development of malocclusions.
